Dear Club Presidents,

CEO & Chair Update - August 2026

As we enter the start of a new month and look towards the final quarter of the year, there is plenty happening across our sport. International racing has been a major focus for the performance team, providing plenty of excitement and showcasing the strength and depth of our athletes on the world stage. Closer to home, there is still plenty of activity across State and Territory events, along with the need to take stock, reflect on the year so far and, importantly, focus on the work that will set us up for success in 2027.

Clubs remain a key focus of that work. The recent transition to and roll-out of the JustGo membership platform and refreshed membership products, combined with other major projects such as the Road Taskforce and Event Sanctioning framework continue to strengthen the foundations that aim to support a healthy and sustainable club network.

Although the year is disappearing, there is still plenty to do, and we look forward to finishing the year strongly and working together to make 2027 a successful year for our sport.

Meeting of the Board and National Advisory Council

The AusCycling Board and National Advisory Council (NAC) recently met in person for a working session to consider the AusCycling operating model and explore how the collective expertise of the NAC could be better utilised.  The workshop aimed to establish the foundations for a review that will look honestly at how the cycling eco-system (AusCycling, clubs, members, delivery partners etc) is working, and importantly now six years post-merger, how it can be enhanced.

The review responds directly to the themes explored throughout the SGM process, earlier this year and the strong desire from AusCycling and Clubs to advance the sport together.  The terms of reference for the review will be finalised by the Board and NAC in the coming month or two, and we look forward to sharing this with you in due course.

Acknowledging our outgoing Directors

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our outgoing Directors, Brian Gallagher and Michael Smith AO, for their incredible service and contribution to AusCycling over the past six years.

Both Brian and Michael have played an important role in guiding AusCycling through a significant period of growth, change and transformation. Their experience, expertise and commitment have been invaluable to the Board and to the organisation more broadly.

Brian Gallagher brought more than three decades of senior leadership experience across broadcast, production and digital media, along with deep expertise in business growth, transformation and commercial strategy. His perspective and contribution have been particularly valuable as AusCycling has continued to strengthen its brand, media and commercial ambitions.

Michael Smith AO has made an equally significant contribution, including as Chair of both the Performance Committee and Athlete Committee. His extensive experience in business, sport and governance has provided invaluable leadership and perspective, particularly in supporting our performance pathway and ensuring the athlete voice remains central to our work.

We thank them sincerely and wish them all the very best for the future.

Two rainbow jerseys and eight medals at the Para Road World Championships

It was a standout week for Australian Para-cycling at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, with our riders bringing home two rainbow jerseys and eight medals.

The performances are a powerful reflection of the depth, talent and determination across Australian Para-cycling, and a credit to the athletes, coaches, support staff, clubs and everyone behind the scenes who continues to enhance the program.

Congratulations to all the Australian riders on an outstanding championship and particularly to our two new world champions.

Road Taskforce

The Road Racing Taskforce, led by Shane Mattiske, was established to examine the structural health of Australian road racing and to develop practical recommendations for a more viable, sustainable and vibrant future. Its focus extended beyond individual events and considered the complete ecosystem – participants, clubs, organisers, volunteers, officials, venues, calendars, membership, pathways, technology, government relationships and the role of AusCycling.

The Taskforce, which drew on a broad evidence base, and extensive consultation, heard consistent message – rising traffic management costs, access to roads, fragmented calendars, volunteer fatigue and changing participant expectation require a coordinated response to reshape road racing in Australia.

The key findings and options for consideration have been presented to the Board and will be released in the coming weeks.  As we look to 2027, the next and final phase of the project will focus on detailed costing and implementation plans, with priorities and recommendations to be considered by the Board in December 2026.

Project Summit: Building towards Brisbane 2032 and beyond

After completing the Pathways Review, focus has turned to progressing the final piece of work to define what it will truly take for Australian cycling to succeed at Brisbane 2032 and sustain that success beyond the home Games. Strategy development is now well advanced across the Olympic and Paralympic disciplines, with the detailed plans being tested and challenged through athlete insight, expert input and senior leadership review.

The Board will consider the future investment settings and priorities for high performance in 2027, balancing the immediate requirements of LA 2028 with the significant opportunity to build towards Brisbane 2032 and a sustainable high-performance legacy beyond.

Thank you again for everything you do for cycling and your local communities. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or would like more information on any topics covered this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Marne Fechner
